5th Grade Math and Science: Mrs. Thompson

Welcome!

Our math class will combine critical thinking and problem solving skills with collaboration as we address grade-level concepts. In 6th grade, topics include area of composite shapes and surface area, ratios and rates, evaluating equations and expressions, and statistics. In 5th grade, our major focus is on decimal and fraction operations, order of operations, graphing, and volume. Both fifth and sixth grades also spend a trimester tackling the standards for mathematical practice and addressing financial literacy concepts.

Science class is centered around inquiry as we explore the natural world. ELA concepts will be integrated regularly as we tackle reading informational texts and writing quality responses and scientific arguments. In 6th grade, we will dive into electricity and magnetism, potential and kinetic energy, plate tectonics and Earth's changing surface, and cell theory. 5th grade science focuses on the Earth's systems, energy flow through ecosystems, matter and its interactions, and the role of Earth's movements in our seasons, day and night, and changing night sky. Both fifth and sixth grades also participate in a trimester of coding and robotics and a trimester of design thinking and three-dimension design (complete with 3D printing).

At Bishop McNamara, our commitment is to meet each child where they are and then to inspire them to realize their unique potential.  We look forward to watching our grow and learn during this school year!
