When Edwin, a BMCS honor-roll senior, was leaving a home football game, he noticed that a fan from the opposing team was struggling to walk and needed assistance to get to her car. Without hesitation, he asked the woman if she needed help and went out of his way to help her walk through the busy parking lot. The simple act of kindness was one that Edwin didn't think twice about - it's how he was raised. "My family has been my foundation for doing what's right. Being a student at Bishop McNamara helps build on the values my family has taught me," said Edwin.
A few days after the football game, the woman who Edwin helped took time to email the administration to let them know about how well one of our students was representing Bishop McNamara. However, the woman did not know the student's name. "When I received the email and read the story, I immediately knew that the woman was talking about Edwin. It's his character to think of others before himself," said Terry Granger, BMCS President.
The following is a copy of the email we received:
Hello, I just wanted to take a moment to write and let you know about one of your students. I was at the football games Friday with ICCP that my grandsons play for. Within the past few months I had two knee replacements. So before the game was over I had to go back to the car due to being kind of worn out. I have a walker and I was fine. As I started walking, a young man came up to me and asked if I needed help. I thanked him and said we are parked right down here in handicapped parking. He said, well I’m going that way anyway can I walk with you? I said sure and we started talking and I think he said he had played soccer in the field on the other side of the building. We talked a little more and one of the football coaches came by and asked how he did. I mentioned to the coach what a nice young man he was and I told him here’s my car, thanks for walking with me and I asked him if I could give him a hug. He said sure. So we hugged and I got in the car and he and the coach walked back toward the football field. I don’t know his name, but I wanted the school to know this incident. I’m a great believer in Catholic education, I had 12 years of it. However, he must also learn that kind of behavior at home. I just wanted to compliment the school and also his parents. Not knowing his name I know that’s not possible. But you can be proud of what your students do when they are not in “school”.
